Your website suddenly stopped working and you don’t know how to solve the problem? Such a situation can be very frustrating and stressful, especially if you run an online store, business or blog. However, with a few simple steps you can quickly get your website back up and running. Check out what to do in case of a sudden website crash.
Check your Internet connection
In case of website accessibility problems, the first thing you should do is check the quality of your Internet connection. In many cases, it is the network failure that prevents you from using the site. Check whether other sites are loading correctly. If the situation is identical, you probably have an Internet problem.
The provider may be responsible for the Internet failure. Sometimes, however, the problem lies with the router. If your other devices can’t access the network either, it’s a good idea to reset the router. It’s also a good idea to check that none of the cables are damaged or disconnected from the router
Refresh the website
If the problem is not on the Internet side, the next step may be to refresh the website. Sometimes a non-working page is the result of misloading or browser cache conflicts. Refreshing the page can help restore functionality.
You can reload the page in several ways:
- Click the refresh button on the browser toolbar.
- Click the right mouse button and select refresh page from the context menu.
- Use the keyboard shortcut F5 or Ctrl+R.
- Type the page address again in the active or new browser window, then press Enter.
Use another search engine
If your site doesn’t work properly in one browser, try opening it in another. After all, sometimes problems with a site’s display and functionality can be due to technical incompatibilities between the site and a particular browser. As a first step, it’s a good idea to simply turn the program off and on again.
If the page still doesn’t load, then try different web browsers. You can use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari, among others. This way you can quickly identify if the problem is only in one particular browser.
Clear cache and cookies
Problems with a website are sometimes related to a malfunctioning cache or cookies, which may be corrupted or outdated. Clearing the aforementioned items does not take much time and is really simple:
- Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the browser.
- Select “Settings.”
- Go to the “Privacy and security” section.
- Click on “Clear browsing data.”
- Select “Cache” and “Cookies and other site data.”
- Click “Clear data.”
- Try to reload the page.
For other browsers, there may be slight differences in the steps. This is especially true for the naming of sections.
Check updates and plug-ins
The next step in finding the source of the problem is to check the updates and plug-ins on the site. Sometimes conflicts between older versions of software and newer updates can cause the site to not work properly. Make sure all plugins are updated to the latest versions and that there are no conflicts between them.
If you outsource site maintenance to specialists on a daily basis, ask them to do this. Also remember to perform regular browser updates. In the case of Google Chrome, you can usually count on automatic installation of the latest version of the software.
Contact your hosting provider
None of the previously mentioned steps yielded the expected results? If your site is hosted on an external server, contact your hosting provider. In the event of a server failure or other hosting malfunction, the provider can identify and resolve the problem. Report the incident to the customer service department and describe the problem in detail. If the issue is not serious, it is usually possible to restore the operation of your site fairly quickly.
Get help from professionals
If, after taking basic corrective steps, the site still does not work, it is time to apply to the professionals. This is because sometimes the problem is much more complicated, and interfering with the site yourself can only do harm. In particular, turning to the people who designed and implemented your site may be a shot in the arm.
